About this map

The maritime and industrial character of coastal New England is defined by the Providence and Boston Railroad as it skirts the shoreline through Stonington and over the Pawcatuck River into Westerly. This late nineteenth-century landscape is a network of tidal inlets and working waterfronts, from the busy harbor at Mystic Bridge to the isolated Light House at Stonington Pt. and the Life Saving Station on Napatree Beach. Inland, the terrain rises toward hills like Lantern Hill, where the Silex Mine and Long Hill indicate active extraction. The map preserves the complex political and physical boundaries of the era, including the Boundary Line between Connecticut and Rhode Island, and the numerous small manufacturing hamlets like Stillmanville and White Rock that grew along the river falls north of the sound.
