About this map

Lake Erie’s western shore reveals a landscape of developing summer communities and rural school districts in this mid-1930s survey. Stretching from Oldport down to Detroit Beach, the shoreline is punctuated by early vacation enclaves such as Lagoona Beach and Woodland Beach. Inland, the townships of Frenchtown and Berlin are defined by a dense network of one-room schoolhouses, including Scrabble Hollow Sch, Bomya Sch, and Webb Sch, which served the farming families of the Monroe area.
