The Mississippi River and Vermillion River meander through the northern reaches of this landscape, defining a region rich with glacial lakes and wetlands on the border of Cass and Itasca counties. Much of the central terrain is managed as part of the Chippewa National Forest, where smaller water bodies like Skunk Lake and Little Vermillion Lake are tucked into the timber. To the south, the topography rises into the Sugar Hills, overlooking the prominent Sugar Lake and its surrounding network of local access routes including Sugar Lake Dr NE and the Sugar Lake Hwy Trl.
