About this map

Gates of the Artic National Park and the adjacent Gates of the Artic Wilderness dominate this remote northern landscape, as documented in the mid-1980s. The terrain is defined by a complex network of glacial valleys and water bodies, most notably the expansive Walker Lake in the northeast and Nutuvukti Lake at the southern edge. The Reed River meanders through the central corridor, flanked by high ridges and peaks. These drainage systems, including Inyulak Creek and Kaluluktok Creek, illustrate the natural boundaries that separate the national park from the Gates of the Artic National Preserve. Compiled from 1978 aerial photography, this provisional study highlights a region devoid of roads or trails, where the land's character is shaped entirely by its waterways and topography.
