Schwatka Mountains define the high-altitude topography of this wilderness area within Gates Of The Arctic National Park. The landscape is dominated by the steep drainage of the Kugrak River, which flows through the central portion of the quadrangle. The lack of human infrastructure or established trails reflects the primitive state of this subarctic environment in the early 21st century. Danger Pass provides a significant transit point through the mountain range, sitting at the western edge of the survey area. This 2016 record emphasizes the preservation of natural hydrology and topography in one of the most secluded regions of Alaska's Northwest Arctic Borough.
