Gates of the Arctic National Park encompasses this wilderness region in the northern interior of Alaska, where the high peaks of the Endicott Mountains dominate the landscape. The terrain is defined by steep elevation changes and narrow valleys, carved over time by the winding course of the Nahtuk River. This river flows generally southward through the center of the sheet, providing a natural corridor through the surrounding high country.
