Chase and Long Island represent the primary points of human geography in this wilderness sector of the Talkeetna Mountains. The landscape is dominated by the powerful flow of the Susitna River in the northwest, which serves as a major drainage for the complex network of alpine streams including Deadhorse Cr and Lane Cr. The southeastern portion of the map is defined by the winding course of Chunilna Creek, which cuts through significant elevation changes within the Matanuska-Susitna borough. This 2016 survey illustrates a largely roadless interior, where small settlements like Chase rely on the corridor established by the river and railroad routes just beyond the immediate peaks. The terrain is characterized by high-altitude ridges and glacial valleys, showing the natural state of the Alaskan interior before modern expansion or infrastructure.
