Ray River Hot Spring stands as a notable geological landmark in this mid-century interior Alaskan landscape, situated along the winding course of the Ray River. The terrain is defined by a series of drainage systems, including the aptly named Asbestos Creek and the southern reaches of Dreamland Creek. The presence of the hot spring suggests a unique geothermal signature within this subarctic environment, long before modern infrastructure reached the area.

Mapping of the region, including the area labeled Big Salt, was compiled from aerial photography taken in the mid-1950s. The hydrology is further detailed by Salt Creek and Hala Creek, which carve through the elevations of the Tanana quadrangle. At the time of this survey, the region remained largely undeveloped, with no roads or trails recorded, preserving a record of the natural watershed and landforms in their primary state.
