The town of Dawson and the southern portion of Tappen anchor the northern edge of this Kidder County landscape, where the prairie is defined by a dense concentration of glacial potholes and permanent lakes. These water bodies, including Lake Isabel, Harker Lake, and Lake Henry, create a complex hydrographic pattern that dictates the path of the section-line roads. The rural character of the region is punctuated by small, significant sites for local history, such as Sibley Cem and Liberty Cem, located near 35th Ave SE. The terrain consists of low rises and depressions typical of the Missouri Coteau, where land use is split between agriculture and the preservation of natural wetland habitats like those surrounding Headquarters Lake and Upper Harker Lake. This 2014 survey captures the area's modern infrastructure, including the grid of county roads such as 40th St SE and Troy Ave that service the farming community.
