About this map

Industrial infrastructure meets a sprawling wetland landscape along the Neches River in this mid-century survey. The southern edge of the map is dominated by an extensive Oil Refinery at Smith Bluff Cutoff, while the marshy lowlands to the north are defined by the North Port Neches Oil and Gas Field and the Bessie Heights Oil and Gas Field. A series of family burial grounds, including Wallace Cem, Williams Cem, and Adcock Cem, are scattered along the drier ridges and rail lines, providing significant genealogical markers for the region. The Southern Pacific railroad cuts a straight line through the upper portion of the quadrangle, passing through the small settlements of Connell, Terry, and Oilla. Extensive levee systems and man-made canals illustrate the early efforts to manage the water and extract resources from the surrounding bayous, such as Cow Bayou and Anderson Gully.
