The E Fork Virgin River carves a complex path through the heart of this Kane County landscape, defining the deep sandstone corridors known as The Barracks. This 2014 survey documents a transition from the preserved wilderness of Zion National Park on the western edge to the expansive public lands to the east. The terrain is marked by significant vertical relief, where high plateaus like Poverty Flat drop into narrow drainage systems such as Parunuweap Canyon and Mineral Gulch. In the southern reaches, the prominent White Cliffs rise above Elephant Cove and Shunes Hollow, illustrating the classic geological layering of the region. Transportation is concentrated in the northern section along the Zion Mount Carmel Hwy, which provides access to the high desert terrain of Indian Knoll and the various seasonal washes including Poverty Wash.
