The Neches River dominates this landscape on the border of Tyler and Jasper Counties, weaving through the dense bottomlands of the Big Thicket National Preserve. The river’s course is defined by a series of backwater lakes and sloughs, including McMickin Lake, Brushy Lake, and Barlow Lake, reflecting the hydrologic complexity of the Piney Woods. This 2019 survey documents a network of recreational water routes, such as the Cherokee Paddling Trail and the Walnut Paddling Trail, which provide access to the river's winding channels.
