Industrial activity and water-bound wilderness meet in this 1959 study of the Cuyuna Range. The Mississippi River winds through the southern landscape, passing just north of the mining communities of Trommald and Manganese. These settlements are closely tied to the iron industry, as evidenced by the nearby Musser Mine and Maroco Mine, while the Northern Pacific railroad provides the vital transport link for extracted ore.

The central portion of the map is dominated by the sprawling waters of Upper Mission Lake and Lower Mission Lake, which are protected within the Crow Wing State Forest. Evidence of early community life is visible at the small settlement of Mission, the Mission Cem, and the Silver Lake Sch to the west. The terrain is a complex network of glacial features, including the Pine River and smaller bodies like Lizard Lake and Horseshoe Lake.
