About this map

Troy anchors the northeastern corner of this Idaho landscape, where the Northern Pacific railroad tracks follow the curve of Little Bear Creek past the small settlements of Joel, Cornwall, and Howell. The geography is defined by prominent upland features such as American Ridge and Driscoll Ridge, which separate the various drainage basins of the Potlatch Creek system. The map captures a transition from the agricultural plateaus of Dutch Flat to the deeply incised valleys of Middle Potlatch Creek and Little Potlatch Creek. Local social and industrial life is evidenced by the Aspendale Community Hall and several scattered gravel pits, illustrating the rural infrastructure of Latah County at the dawn of the 1960s. The dense concentration of contour lines along the creek forks reveals the steep, wooded breaks typical of the Palouse periphery.
