The high plateau of the Edwards Plateau region is defined by a network of seasonal watercourses and deeply cut drainage patterns along the Val Verde and Edwards County line. Modern transit through this arid landscape is centered on Highway 277, which bisects the area as it travels across the divide. The topography is dominated by the intermittent flow of the Dry Devils River, which collects runoff from several prominent drainage features.
