The Skwentna River and Hayes River converge in a wide, braided valley, dominating the drainage pattern of this Matanuska-Susitna interior. This mid-century landscape is defined by its glacial hydrology and the prominent Shell Hills rising to the northeast above Shell Lake. The terrain is marked by a complex network of tributaries, including Canyon Creek and Thursday Creek, which carve through the high elevations in the south and west.

Evidence of human presence in this wilderness is sparse, limited to a remote Cabin and Cache located near the shore of Onestone Lake. These labels indicate the area's use for seasonal trapping or subsistence at the time of the 1954 field annotation. While much of the land remained unsurveyed by the Bureau of Land Management, the mapping of Canyon Lake and Contact Creek provides a precise record of the topography before significant modern development reached the upper Susitna basin.
