Strategic passage through the mountains is marked by the path of the National Road, which leads past significant landmarks such as Braddocks Grave and the site of Fort Necessity. Further east, the rugged terrain of the Youghiogheny River valley and high points like Kentucky Knob contrast with the burgeoning mining towns. Surveyed just before the turn of the century by Frank Sutton and members of the H. C. Frick Coke Company, the map captures the transition from frontier pass to industrial powerhouse.
