Red Rock Lakes National Wildlife Refuge dominates the northern reaches of this landscape, where the waters of Upper Red Rock Lake are fed by Red Rock Cr and Battle Cr. The terrain transitions sharply from the wetlands of the Centennial Valley into the high elevations of the Centennial Mountains, which form a natural barrier and state boundary. The Continental Divide winds across these peaks, separating the drainages of the Targhee National Forest to the south from the northern valley floor.
