Champaign and Urbana dominate the northern portion of this mid-century survey, revealing a landscape defined by rapid institutional and educational growth. The urban core of Cunningham TWP is densely packed with local landmarks, ranging from the University High Sch and Armory to the Burnham Hospital and Carle Hospital complexes. Significant land is dedicated to the dead and the living alike, with the large Mt Hope Cemetery bordering the developed areas.

South of the city, the terrain transitions into the agricultural expanse of Yankee Ridge. This rural sector is punctuated by small settlements like Mira and the village of Philo, as well as numerous country schoolhouses such as the Silver Sch and the then-vacant School No 4. The industrial and transportation backbone of the county is visible through the converging lines of the Illinois Terminal, New York Central, and Wabash railroads, which facilitated the movement of goods and people before the major interstate expansions.
