The Adirondack Mountains dominate the eastern half of this mid-century landscape, where massive tracts of the Adirondack Park meet the industrialized valleys of central New York. The Mohawk River corridor serves as the primary artery for transportation and settlement, anchoring a chain of cities from Rome and Utica through Little Falls and Amsterdam. This area is defined by the New York State Thruway and the N. Y. Central railroad, which parallel the historic water route. To the west, the Oneida Lake (Barge Canal Route) marks the gateway to the central plains, while the Tug Hill Plateau rises sharply to the north. Smaller settlements like Boonville and Old Forge serve as transition points between the agricultural lowlands and the remote timber and recreation lands surrounding Raquette Lake and the Stillwater Reservoir.
