Vanceburg sits prominently along the southern bank of the Ohio River, serving as a primary hub where the CSX railroad and KY 8 parallel the water. The landscape is defined by the sharp transition from the river bottomlands, such as Kennedys Bottom and Irish Bottom, to the deeply dissected ridges of the Kentucky interior. To the south, Kinniconick Creek winds through a series of steep hollows including Puncheon Camp Hollow and Backbone Hollow.
