About this map

The Black River anchors the industrial and municipal layout of Watertown at a time when the R. W. and O. Division and the Sackets Harbor Line drove local commerce. Beyond the city center, the landscape is defined by the steep relief of Rutland Hollow and the deep incisions of the Big Gulf Stream and Bear Gulf. Small, nineteenth-century agricultural hubs such as Fields Settlement, Burrs Mills, and Tylerville South Rutland P.O. appear with their original post offices, providing a look at the rural social structure before the consolidation of rural delivery routes. Notable landmarks for local historians include the expansive Brookside Cemetery and several family-named crossroads like Whitford Corners and Tremaines Corners, which reflect the early lineage of Jefferson County settlers along the various branches of Sandy Creek.
