Westernport and Piedmont anchor this industrial landscape along the Potomac River, where the borders of Maryland and West Virginia meet. The river valley is a corridor of heavy activity, characterized by the rail infrastructure of the Baltimore and Ohio and the pulp and paper operations in Luke. To the west, the landscape shifts toward the steep elevations of Allegheny and Front ridges.

Evidence of the region's extractive economy is visible in several Strip Mines and the presence of the W Va Central Junc. Local heritage is preserved in smaller settlements like Bloomington and Barnum, alongside rural landmarks such as Cross School and Duling Ch. Of particular note are the 1974 revisions indicating areas soon to be submerged by Bloomington Lake, a change that would fundamentally alter the North Branch geography.
