About this map

Windrock Mountain and the steep slopes of Walden Ridge dominate the landscape of the late 1960s, where coal extraction and modern nuclear-age development meet. The town of Oliver Springs sits at the geological junction of Dutch Valley and the valley floor, served by the Louisville and Nashville and Southern railroads. To the north, the terrain is marked by numerous strip mines and small settlements like Windrock Fields and Frost Bottom. To the southeast, the emerging planned character of Oak Ridge is evident, featuring the Atomic Energy Museum and Oak Ridge Airpark. The map preserves local family history through numerous small burial grounds such as Duggan Cem and Harness Cem, alongside rural landmarks like Big Mountain Church and the Peachtree Gap mountain pass.
