The Boston Mountains dominate this 1898 survey of the rugged borderlands between northwest Arkansas and the Cherokee Nation Indian Territory. This era captures a landscape defined by significant transportation arteries, most notably the St. Louis and San Francisco RR winding through the high passes near Winslow and the historic Old Wire Road cutting across the northwestern ridges. These routes connected established settlements like Prairie Grove and Boonsboro to the more remote southern townships.

Water-carved terrain is evident in the numerous hollows and the distinctive Natural Dam on Lee Creek. Local history is preserved in the location of the Liberty Hill Ch and the dispersed network of post offices and small communities such as Cove City, Dutch Mills, and Dripping Springs.
