1892 Map of Woodstock

About this map

Woodstock and the long valley of the Shenandoah River anchor this late-nineteenth-century survey of the Virginia-West Virginia borderlands. The landscape is defined by the repetitive northeast-southwest orientation of the Appalachian ridges, including the massive Massanutten Mountain and the high peaks of Paddy Mountain and Little Sluice Mountain. A clear industrial legacy is visible through the presence of several ironworks such as Van Buren Furnace, Liberty Furnace, and Columbia Furnace, which were critical to the local economy of the era.
