Wright and Tamarack serve as the primary hubs in this lake-heavy portion of Northeast Minnesota, situated along the county line between Aitkin Co and Carlton Co. The landscape is dominated by complex water systems, including the Little Tamarack River in the north and the W Br Kettle River flowing through the southern wetlands. The settlement at Wright is clearly defined by its local institutions, featuring several burial grounds such as Wright Community Cem and Wright Catholic Cem. The area is characterized by numerous small bodies of water like Cole Lake, Mattila Lake, and Cranberry Lake, many of which are connected by a network of rural roads such as Mattila Rd and Co Hwy 20. This 2016 survey illustrates the persistent rural character of the region, where the abundance of lakes and marshes has historically dictated the placement of roads and homesteads.
