About this map

The high desert borderlands of Greenlee County, Arizona, and Catron County, New Mexico, are defined by the convergence of the Apache National Forest and the Gila National Forest. This landscape is centered on the prominent Alma Mesa and the drainage of the Blue River, a remote terrain where water sources are vital. Named features such as Charlie Moore Place and the Stateline Camp indicate the enduring presence of ranching and land management in this frontier environment. The area is heavily marked by essential water infrastructure, from natural points like Yarn Spring and Vee Spring to man-made cattle tanks including Sixshooter Flat Tank and Cradle Mesa Tank. Much of the western portion falls within the protected Blue Range Primitive Area, where the rugged topography transitions from the heights of Horse Mountain down to the deep canyons of the Blue River valley.
