1893 Map of Anthracite

About this map

Mining settlements and high-altitude basins dominate this late nineteenth-century survey of the West Elk Mountains. The Denver South Park and Pacific Railroad terminates in the south at Baldwin, marking the industrial edge of the coal-rich Anthracite Range. Further north, the twin camps of Irwin and Ruby sit near Lake Brennan, illustrating the rapid expansion of the silver mining era. The landscape is defined by a dense network of glacial cirques and mineral-rich catchments such as Silver Basin and Dippold Basin. Heavy industry and early transport are further evidenced by the Mt Carbon P.O. and the rugged White River Trail, while the eastern portion follows the Slate River valley past the camps of Pittsburgh and Elkton.
