1893 Map of Anthracite

USGS Topo · Published 1909

About this map

Mining settlements and high-altitude basins dominate this late nineteenth-century reconnaissance of the Gunnison country. The map details a period of intense alpine activity, centered around the neighboring towns of Irwin and Ruby, situated just below Scarp Ridge. These mountain outposts, along with Pittsburgh and Elkton to the northeast, reflect the era's drive into the mineral-rich heights of the Ruby Range and Anthracite Range. Transport to these remote areas was facilitated by the Denver South Park and Pacific Railroad, which terminates at Baldwin near the Mt Carbon P.O. at the southern edge of the survey.
