About this map

The Continental Divide carves a sharp boundary through the center of this high-elevation landscape, separating the headwaters of the Fraser River and Clear Creek. In the late 1950s, this region of the Arapaho National Forest balanced industrial utility with a growing winter recreation economy. Evidence of massive water management projects is clear, from the August P Gumlick Tunnel (Jones Pass Tunnel) to several aqueducts and ditches designed to divert snowmelt. Local industry is anchored by the Urad Mine in the southwest, while the development of the mountains for sport is visible in the Mary Jane Ski Trail, the First Creek Ski Cabin, and the early chairlifts at Berthoud Pass. These mountain passes, including Vasquez Pass, served as critical transit points through the difficult terrain of Grand and Clear Creek counties.
