The braided channels of the Tanana River dominate this interior Alaska landscape, captured during a period of postwar development along the Richardson Highway. This arterial route connects several recreational and logistical landmarks, including the prominent Harding Lake with its dedicated picnic area and youth camp, and the smaller Birch Lake further south. These lakes, situated on the edge of the Fairbanks North Star Borough, served as significant local hubs for residents and personnel from Fort Wainwright.
