About this map

Yukon Flats dominate this interior Alaskan landscape, characterized by a complex network of wetlands and small water bodies. The Yukon Flats National Wildlife Refuge encompasses much of the territory, reflecting the federal conservation efforts established by the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act. The Little Black River meanders through the western portion of the quadrangle, serving as a primary hydrologic feature in an area otherwise defined by its low-lying, swampy character. To the southeast, the terrain shifts abruptly at Bear Mountain, where the land rises toward a distinct peak. Along the southern edge, Bear Creek flows through the foothills, marking a transition from the saturated flats to more elevated ground. This 1984 revision remains largely devoid of roads or settlements, preserving a snapshot of the region's wilderness state in the mid-1980s.
