About this map

The Brighton Seminole Indian Reservation occupies the eastern portion of this mid-century landscape, where the Everglades begin to give way to the prairie and scrub of the Florida interior. Topography here is defined by subtle elevations and water management, with the Harney Pond Canal and Gator Slough cutting through the terrain to regulate the drainage of this seasonally wet region. The boundary between Highlands Co and Glades Co bisects the northern reaches, crossing near the isolated Cabbage Island. Evidence of agricultural activity and land modification is clear through the presence of a lone Windmill and various sections of Spoil Bank, illustrating the transition of these wetlands into managed territory during the early 1950s.
