About this map

The high-altitude drainage systems of the Gunnison National Forest and Rio Grande National Forest meet along the Continental Divide in this late 1950s survey. The landscape is defined by vast mesas and deep canyons, where water management is evident through numerous catchments like the Santa Maria Reservoir and Continental Reservoir. Remnants of earlier transport networks appear as the Powderhorn Old Stage Sta (Ruins) and the San Juan Ranch (Old Stage Sta), marking old transit corridors through the high country. Natural landmarks such as North Clear Creek Falls and South Clear Creek Falls punctuate the steep terrain near Brown Lakes. Resource extraction and land use are indicated by scattered Prospect labels and a network of Jeep Trails and Stock Driveways, reflecting a mid-century economy focused on ranching, forestry, and recreation in the shadow of Bristol Head.
