Burnham and the neighboring industrial corridor along Kishacoquillas Creek define the landscape of central Mifflin County in the mid-1960s. The settlement pattern follows the floor of the Kishacoquillas Valley, where the Penn Central rail lines connect the borough to Yeagertown, Reedsville, and Milroy. While the valley floor is densely settled and agricultural, containing landmarks like Alexander Cavern and the Kishacoquillas High Sch, it is sharply hemmed in by the forested ridges of Jacks Mountain and Front Mountain. Local infrastructure is well-documented, from the Filtration Plant and Substation serving the borough to the Drive-in Theater south of town. Notable for genealogists are the numerous scattered rural burial sites, including Birch Hill Cem and Old Salem Cem, alongside various township schools and small country churches like Hartman Center Ch that served these valley communities.
