The town of Butler sits at the intersection of a grid-iron road network and a landscape defined by an extensive water management system. Located in Custer County, the settlement is anchored by a concentrated street plan including Broadway St, Main Ave, and Railroad Ave. Outside the town center, the terrain is dominated by the upper reaches of the Barnitz Creek watershed, evidenced by numerous man-made impoundments such as Barnitz Cr Site 50 Reservoir and Barnitz Cr Site 43 Reservoir. These reservoirs indicate a landscape heavily modified for flood control and water storage. Genealogists will find several burial grounds distributed across the townships, including Butler Cem, Osceola Cem, Shiloh Cem, and Antioch Cem. The hydrology is further defined by several tributaries, notably W Barnitz Cr, Twin Cr, and Crooked Cr, which carve through the Oklahoma plains.
