The Chikaskia River and its numerous tributaries, including Sandy Creek, wind through this south-central Kansas landscape just north of the Kansas Oklahoma Boundary Line. At the turn of the century, the region was defined by its intensive railroad development, with the Atchison Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad and the Missouri Pacific Railroad connecting established prairie hubs. Caldwell stands as the primary southern center, showing a dense street grid and significant rail junctions.
