The settlement of Cañones lies at the base of dramatic plateau systems where the northern reaches of the Santa Fe National Forest and Carson National Forest meet. This landscape is defined by its massive flat-topped mesas, including Blanca Mesa, Pueblo Mesa, and Cañones Mesa, which overlook the village and the winding course of Cañones Cr. To the north, the Rio Chama flows toward the Abiquiu Reservoir, while the prominent landmark of Cerro Pedernal rises to the west, anchoring the topography of the Rio Arriba highlands.
