About this map

The Susquehanna River and its accompanying rail corridors dominate the northern reaches of this landscape, where the Bloomsburg Ferry and towns like Rupert and Catawissa serve as vital transport nodes. This 1889 reconnaissance survey reveals the intense industrial and topographical character of Pennsylvania’s coal regions, particularly as the terrain rises south into a series of parallel ridges including Catawissa Mountain and Locust Mountain. In the southern half of the map, the dense settlement patterns of Mount Carmel, Centralia, and Girardville illustrate the concentration of labor and infrastructure around the anthracite fields. A complex network of railroads, including the Lehigh Valley Railroad and several divisions of the Philadelphia and Reading Railroad, laces through the narrow valleys and gaps, connecting collieries and small mining patches like Locust Gap and Enterprise to larger markets.
