The Steese National Conservation Area encompasses a significant portion of this interior Alaskan landscape, which is defined by its complex drainage network and high-elevation terrain. Two major river branches, the North Fork Chena River and the Middle Fork Chena River, dictate the geography of the area, serving as primary hydrologic arteries. The boundary between the Fairbanks North Star Borough and the Yukon-Koyukuk Census Area cuts through this wilderness, following the ridgelines that separate these remote watersheds.
