Des Lacs sits at the southern edge of this Ward County landscape, where the local topography is defined by the sharp descent from the prairie plateau into the valley of the Des Lacs River. The river winds through a series of deep ravines, or coulees, including Lonetree Coulee, Karlsen Coulee, and Tasker Coulee, which create a distinctive drainage pattern feeding into the larger valley. Near the town of Foxholm, the terrain begins its transition toward the Upper Souris National Wildlife Refuge and the Souris River in the northeast.
