Rising sharply above the river valley, the terrain is defined by dramatic elevations including Mount Fleecer and Charcoal Mountain. Numerous drainages like Quartz Hill Gulch and Nez Perce Gulch provide evidence of early land use, such as the Jerry Creek Cow Camp and the Divide Sch located near the eastern edge. This area, surveyed in the early 1960s, reflects a rugged transition from high-country ridge lines like Fleecer Ridge to the essential water and rail routes of the Big Hole Valley.
