Wood River meanders through the heart of this landscape, its winding course defining the southern reaches of the Fort Wainwright Military Reservation. The map captures a transition from the broad, swampy lowlands of the north to the more defined drainage systems in the south. These southern waters, including Tatlanika Creek and the southern tributaries of Fish Creek, carve through the terrain as it begins to rise toward the Buttes and the prominent Wood River Butte.
