The low-lying shoreline of Saginaw Bay defines the character of this Tuscola County landscape, where the land meets the water at the prominent Fish Point. Established as the Fish Point Wildlife Area, the region shows a sophisticated network of agricultural drainage common to the Thumb of Michigan, including the Wisconsin Drain and Ackerman Drain. These man-made channels allowed for the conversion of coastal wetlands into productive farmland divided by a strict grid of roads such as Kindler Road and Thomas Road. Small settlements and points of interest like Thomas, Bay Park, and Oakhurst are situated along the coast, while the interior is marked by local landmarks such as the Hickory Highland Cem and a Townhall. An interesting industrial remnant, a Mine Dump, appears near the boundary between Akron and Wisner townships, hinting at the subsurface resources of the area.
