The Kissimmee River meanders through the heart of this Central Florida landscape, serving as the border between Highlands and Okeechobee counties. This 1952 survey shows the area during a period of significant military and agricultural transition. Much of the western territory is occupied by the Avon Park Bombing Range, defined by a clear Bombing Range Boundary that separates ordnance testing grounds from the surrounding wetlands.

Along the riverbanks, history-rich sites such as Fort Kissimmee and the nearby Fort Kissimmee Cem provide evidence of early frontier presence. The terrain is characterized by a series of hammock islands, including Mosquito Hammock, Mc Guire Hammock, and Saddle Hammock, which rise slightly above the water-logged lowlands. A network of sloughs, such as Pine Island Slough and Gum Slough, drain into the main river channel, where a Gaging Station monitors the flow of this vital Florida waterway.
