The Platte River valley defines the character of this central Nebraska landscape, with its complex braided channels and large river-bottom islands. The Middle Channel Platte River, North Channel Platte River, and South Channel Platte River create a vast riparian network that includes Fort Farm Island, Clark Island, and Killgore Island. This topography necessitated unique land use patterns, seen in the proximity of the Union Pacific line near Gibbon in the north and the Burlington Northern tracks passing through Lowell to the south.
