The tiny settlement of Grotto sits at the northern edge of this high-country landscape, serving as a gateway to the steep drainages of the Mt Baker Snoqualmie National Forest. In the mid-1960s, this area remained a hub of mountain industry and resource extraction, defined by the heavy infrastructure of the Burlington Northern railroad and a large industrial Pipeline tracking the South Fork Skykomish River. Deep in the backcountry, the presence of the Cleopatra Mine and various other unnamed Mines and a Quarry suggest a long history of prospecting and mineral interest in these peaks.

The southern portion of the map is dominated by the Alpine Lakes Wilderness, where high-elevation water bodies like Francis Lake, Coney Lake, and Lake Kanim reflect the glacially-carved geography. Recreation is evidenced by the Money Creek Campground and a network of Pack Trail routes that penetrate the wilderness boundary. The convergence of the West Fork Miller River and East Fork Miller River underscores the complex watershed that drains north toward the Skykomish corridor.
