Altenbern Ranch sits at the base of the high mesas in Garfield County, serving as a rare center of habitation in this high-altitude landscape. The terrain is defined by dramatic elevation changes between the Roan Creek valley floor and massive formations like Upper Four A Mountain and Brush Mountain. An intricate network of canyons and gulches, including Quakie Canyon and Sawmill Gulch, drain the ridges, while numerous vital water sources like Sheep Corral Spring and Henderson Spring are tucked into the breaks. The presence of County Hwy-204 following the creek bed suggests the importance of water-level routes for navigating the steep geography. This 2010 survey also highlights significant features such as the Escalante Breaks and the broad flats of Gasaway Bench, which reveal the layered geological character of the western Colorado backcountry.
