Lake Maloney dominates the southern portion of this landscape, its waters broken by Scout Island, Goose Island, Two Tree Island, and Duck Island. Fed by the Outlet Canal, the reservoir is a central feature of the hydrologic network south of North Platte. To the north, the South Platte River and its accompanying wetlands, including Beer Slough and Fremont Slough, illustrate the complex drainage patterns of the Platte River valley.
